The Dead Sea
Yes, it's drying up. Yes, it's full of salt. Yes, it's hot water. Yes, it stinks to high heaven or at least the sulfur all around is causing it to stink. What is absolutely fabulous though, is the anticipation of what archeological finds will be discovered from the excavation of ground where the Dead Sea once was. I, personally, can't wait!
We left Masada and stopped at En Gedi, the lowest point on the face of the earth. It is 1300 ft below sea level and no life forms live there. Of course they don't!!! The Dead Sea is 7-8 times more salty than our oceans. Because of this, it is very easy to float, even a bit difficult to put your legs back down to stand up once you've been floating.
Bret and I paid an entrance fee to the En Gedi spa. There were locker rooms and a tram that took people back and forth from the luxury swimming pools to the Dead Sea. We opted for the Dead Sea, a quick dunk and then back to Jerusalem.
Once Bret stepped in the water, he realized how hot the water at the shoreline was on his feet. Now remember, we just left Masada and we were already a bit fried. After going out a bit into deeper water, the temperature rose....BARELY. I got in and he was right. My hot bathwater is about the same temp as the Dead Sea.
Anyway, some unpleasant side effects later, we checked the box, got dressed and left the desert for the city.
BTW, they had a sulfur pool that many people were using. Eeeeewwwww! The smell was horrible. We figured out that the strange structures at the base of Masada were the ruins of Sodom and Gomorrah. This explains the sulfur and the salt. YHVH means what He says and we should all pay attention!
