Hezekiah's tunnels

Almost as cool as Masada...well definitely cooler because we were walking in water for most of the way.  King Hezekiah had an underground water tunnel chiseled out so that the city would not have to go outside of it's walls to get water.  It simply flowed in through an underground passageway into a large cistern.

We were actually able to climb down into this tunnel system.  We were warned by the signs that we would be in water mid- thigh high.  However, that depth was only for a short distance at the beginning.  The rest of the search through the tunnels was in ankle and shin height water.  It was cold and refreshing but made it's way over a bedrock that required a sure step.  Other than that, the tunnel was pitch black.  Seriously!  No lights at all.  So we had little tiny keychain lights and tried to make sure we could see the person in front of us at all times.

Some passageways were only about 4.5 feet tall and no more than a slim shoulder width.  Even I was touching the side walls and my poor husband had to crouch and go through sideways a great deal of the time.  But you talk about something we will probably never get to do again..... this is definitely a once in a lifetime adventure.

Imagine Hezekiah directing two teams of masons to chisel toward each other and the outcome being anything but disastrous.  No technology.  No sonar equipment.  Just God.  And a miracle it was when they arrived opposite each other to create this visionary water passage.

We were in the tunnels for about 30 minutes walking through water for over 1/2 a mile with no way out other than forward.  Thankful I'm not claustrophobic!
